A Kestrel prey hand-over

                                                                                Part One

A fine female Kestrel flies from her nest a few metres away onto a favoured prey hand-over point.

She calls to the male who is out hunting, she preens a few feathers and stretches her wings that are a little stiff from spending weeks on the nest.

The male hasn't shown and her chicks are calling so she returns to the nest to comfort them.

Part Two

Within the hour the male arrives on the scene and flies straight to the hand-over point.

He immediately turns towards the nest to visually display his large vole prey to the female as she will not tolerate him there.

She flies in to take the vole and put some space between them while she prepares the vole before taking it on to feed their chicks.

This fine pair of Kestrel are excellent providers for their chicks and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to witness a little of their behaviour again this year
