Low light and mist on the Moors

Low light levels and rolling mist coming in from the East made for difficult exposure of the Short-eared Owls on the high ground and moors of West Cornwall for the second day running yesterday but a few hardy photographers including me were out there giving it a go.

I set my camera shutter speed to a lower level than normal and let my ISO run on Auto to a maximum of ISO 6400 to see what the camera could achieve.

On the few occasions that the Owls came in to the rough grass fields they seemed to be reluctant hunters or perhaps the Vole were not active for them to predate on.

The owls seemed to be spending more time on the ground looking around rather than flying and hunting so I settled for a few 'Owl in the rough grass' shots and finished off waiting to capture take-off sequences to montage later and then headed off home.

Most of these images were taken at 1/1000th of a second and Auto ISO was self selecting around  ISO 2500  which seemed to produce some reasonable images but perhaps more importantly I enjoyed just being there to record the owls response and taking on the challenge that the Cornish weather was presenting.
