Female Great -spotted Woodpecker

A female Woodpecker flies into the feeding station at Stithians Reservoir southern Cut-off and is immediately followed by two of this years off-spring

The first a young male flies straight down onto the ground near the feeders to collect a fallen nut which he takes back onto the feeder post to dissect as he had watched his mother do before but he failed to remember that she used the top horizontal feeder frame section that she landed on not the vertical upright to steady the nuts before splitting them.  He eventually wedged the nut against his leg and managed split it without causing himself any injury with that powerful stabbing beak.

The second bird a young female seemed a bit more experienced.  She also claimed a fall-out nut under the feeders but placed it in a well used tree trunk hole just above ground level and split the nut with her first stab

Its great to spend some time watching inexperienced young wildlife subjects learning the tricks of their trade !
