Kennell Vale Today

Recent heavy rain and waterlogged countryside has increased the water level and spectacle of the River Kennell as its white water torrents race down through a torturous valley route crashing into and over huge granite boulders and falls

The ever resilient Dipper is a past master at selecting new suitable back waters and eddies in the shallows to ensure that it finds enough aquatic insect larva to support their active life style, But this makes it harder to find them as they move up or down stream a lot more,  When the water is lower it allows them to use more popular areas time and time again and gives us the opportunity to predict behaviour and improve our success rate and working locations without disturbing them.

It was a dark and dismal day here in Cornwall and by noon the mizzle turned to showers and then full on rain, By 2pm I had not seen a Dipper for over an hour and was getting a bit wet and chilled. Having taken a look at this  'selfie'  in which I appeared to resemble some sort of morose hooded bandit lurking in King Arthur's enchanted forest, I decided to cut short my visit and returned home to the comforts of a nice log fire and a fresh cup of tea.
