Feeding Spoonbill

A mature Spoonbill flew into Ryan's field from the Hayle Estuary around mid morning to give a good show on what is its third day of fishing in this area.

The bird had landed at the opposite end of Ryan's field lagoon from my location in the hide so I decided to relocate to the main Hayle causeway for closer opportunities but working against the natural light.

Working with these birds can often be difficult as once they have spotted you even at a distance they always tend to wade away in the opposite direction and that was certainly the case this morning.

The bird was however doing very well with its fishing and I watched it catch several decent sized fish and dozens of shrimps all of which were tossed back down its throat very skillfully

With its early lunch sorted the bird flew onto one of the small lagoon islands for a spot of preening before returning its long bill over its shoulder and between its wings for a bit of a snooze and I headed off take advantage of the calm balmy weather with a trip back along the south coast.
