Ruan Lanihorne Osprey

Following several days of sightings of the female Osprey HL7 at Point Quay I picked up on a Cornwall bird sightings report by D Hall at 4.30 pm yesterday of a juvenile Osprey at Ruan Lanihorne that was seen perched in a dead tree on the estuary.

When we arrived at Lanihorne Quay this morning there was no sign of the Osprey but a couple of hours later it suddenly flew over our heads quite low travelling from the north to provide me with the image posted above

Two points of interest were provided from it:

First off it certainly looked like the juvenile seen the evening before due to the buff highlights to its flight feathers.

Secondly I was surprised to note that this bird did not appear to have been rung ?

The bird flew on passed us for several hundred metres then quickly circled and dived into the water which was obscured to us by reed beds and bank,

It must have failed as it was back up to try again but it was still moving away at the same time making our photography trickier as it went,

Just a word of warning with regards this sighting as I know that lots of wildlife Photographers are looking to capture images of these wonderful birds of prey:

Having failed to catch any fish instead of progressing on up or down stream this bird went into the same type of spiral flight that HL7 did when she left Point Quay:  gaining massive height until it was a dot in the distance and looking like it was probably about to head on south.

Ever the optimist I fell sure that there is more time for other migrating Osprey to show up on the Fal Estuary yet so lets all keep watching.
